It’s hard to believe how much time has passed since I last updated. I have a friend who retired early and was afraid of being bored while letting time pass by and getting little accomplished. She says it only takes a few minutes a day to update but it ends up being informative. Something about a short pencil being better than a long memory. While it doesn’t sound like me, perhaps I can give it a try.
I closed my stay at Carolina Beach, NC after five weeks and had a short visit with my sister who is just north of Richmond, VA, and then hit the road to Luray, VA. A generous brewery patron offered to let me park my trailer in his huge yard. A shoutout to Lee, who is in his early 70’s and a Vietnam vet. He likes to drink a few beers and smoke a little weed and tell some amusing tales of a life well lived.
Laurie offered to drive with me to Maine and we got an early Friday morning start headed up Rt 81. We spent the night in the parking lot of a business as part of Harvest Hosts. This is a program where business owners allow RV folks to spend the night with the understanding that you will purchase $20 of their wares. This place sold wine so win-win. From there we drove a few hours to Two Ells Campground in West Chazy, NY which is near Plattsburg. The campground was nearly full but I had secured a reservation for 2 nights @ $27/night plus electric. She had a great time visiting places that were once familiar and walking down memory lane. The only regret was that her childhood friend had left town for Memorial day fun.
The trip to Portland, ME was a pleasant ride after the fact, but I was a little concerned about traveling through the White mountains. I would have hated being the guy pulling a trailer with 50 cars stuck behind, but the roads were good and hassle free.
Wassamki Springs Campground is the closest campground to Portland and my experience here has been very positive. The campground is open from May 1 until Columbus Day which is covered in their seasonal rate package. As expected, there are many who have a seasonal Florida site and spend the summers in Maine. Something about Florida income tax and property tax that folks like. I like this place well enough that I will be returning here next year rather than beginning my sojourn out west.
